Giorgetto Giugiaro – Designer of Alfa Romeo 159

Born on August 1938, Giorgetto Giugiaro is an automobile engineer and designer who have also designed Cameras, Motorcycles and firearms. He was named the ‘Car Designer of the Year’ by the Global Automotive Election Foundation in 1999 and in 2002 was induced in the Automotive Hall of Fame. Interestingly Giorgetto Giugiaro has also designed other items like, computer prototypes, a new pasta shape called ‘Marille’ and office furniture for Okamura Corporation. Giorgetto Giugiaro started his career with Bertone Studios between 1960 and 1965, Carrozzeria Ghia from 1966 to 1968 and finally Italdesign Giugiaro which he established in 1968 and owns currently.

Giorgetto Giugiaro became famous in his early career in for car designs like the Ferrari 250 Berlinetta Bertone, Maserati Ghibli and the famous DeLorean DMC-12. These cars were exemplary of the sharp edged ‘Paper folded’ car design which was quiet popular in the 1970’s. The later designs like the Lamborghini Cala and the Maserati Spyder saw the change in design with more conventional and less edgy models.
